Priest Arrested In Church Theft Investigation

Gardaí investigating the theft of more than €500,000 from a religious order have arrested a 59-year-old priest.

The arrest follows a six-month investigation into the theft, which is understood to have been carried out over a period of 13 years.

It is understood that the case surrounds allegations that the priest, who has not been named, claimed stipends that he was not entitled too, with many allegedly being made in fictitious names and the names of other priests.

Under canon law a priest is entitled claim a stipend from collections made during Mass celebrations. Priest however are not entitled to collect additional payments for leading more than one Mass on one day.

An investigation was launched last year when church authorities became suspicious and alerted garda.

Garda reported that the priest was arrested on Wednesday morning and later released without charge, but they added that the investigation is not yet over.
