Long Term Unemployed To Work For Local Authorities

A new employment initiative will see some 800 long-term unemployed working in Dublin's local authorities by the end of the year.

The Gateway initiative will pay jobseekers an additional €20 a week for 19.5 hours of work.

Dublin City Council is taking on 295 workers, South Dublin and Fingal will get 215, while 110 jobseekers are starting work in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

The jobs will be across a number of areas including parks, landscaping and information technology, along with some being employed as "street ambassadors" to assist tourists.

It is understood that those who refuse to participate in the scheme will face benefits sanctions.
