Govt Considering Ban On Flat Fees On Waste Collection

The government is said to be considering banning flat fees for household waste collection and the introduction of compulsory pay-by-weight charges.

The public are invited to make submissions by the Department of the Environment until Friday, ahead of legislation being drawn up.

It follows an announcement last November by Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan that he intended to regulate waste collection.

The move was designed to tackle the low rates of householder participation in a collection service in some areas, insufficient segregation of waste and a lack of incentive to prevent waste.
