Man Pleads Guilty To Rape Of Young Girls

A 30-year-old is to be sent forward for sentencing after pleading guilty to five charges of raping two young girls.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been on remand at Castlerea Prison since October last year.

The two girls, aged six and nine, went missing after attending a birthday party. It was later discovered the girls had been taken to a nearby house and raped numerous times.

The accused admitted the five charges and agreed to waive his right to the book of evidence.

The man will be sent forward to Central Criminal Court for sentencing at a later date, which has not yet been set.

Man On Run For Six Years Is Remanded
A man has been remanded in custody after being on the run for six years after pleading guilty to rape. Christian Moran, originally from Tullow in County Carlow, had admitted to the rape of a 27-year-old woman in 1999. Mr Moran absconded in July 2001 while awaiting sentencing on bail and he was detained last month by the authorities in the US.

Almost 12,000 Contacted Dublin Rape Crises Centre In 2015
Almost 12,000 people contact the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre in 2015, the organisation has reported. The official figures shows that half of those contacting the national helpline were doing so for the first time about rape or sexual abuse.

Calls To Dublin Rape Crisis Centre Increase
12,192 contacts were answered by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre’s National 24-Hour Helplinein 2013, its highest figure since 2009, according to the latest annual report. 9,614 of the calls were genuine counselling contacts, an increase of 5% compared with 2012 figures. 43% of calls related to adult rape, an increase of 3% compared with 2012 figures.
