Govt Agree New 10 Year Lease For Tara Mines

A new ten year lease has been agreed for Tara Mines between the mines owners and the government, which will also see a substantial underground extension of the mine.

It is hoped that the new lease will secure the jobs of some 650 people employed at the zinc and lead mines.

The new follows earlier uncertainty over the future of the mine, when staff were put on protective notice that jobs were at risk as the mines owners sought ways to save cots.

Mine management and trade union SIPTU held discussions soon after reaching agreements including a reduction in overtime costs, some early retirements and a €110m investment by the company in the mine’s future.
