Ireland Referred To ECJ Over Working Hours

Ireland is to be referred to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for not complying with rules of working time limits.

The referral surrounds the ongoing controversy of the number of working hours for junior doctors in public health services.

According to the Commission, Ireland is failing to ensure that junior doctors work no more than 48 hours per week on average, including overtime.

The government has said that it is committed to achieving compliance with the European Working Time Directive for junior doctors by the end of 2014.
