Doctor's Rosters To Change

The Labour Court has proposed some changes in rostering arrangements for hospital doctors.

If doctors accept the recommendations, it could lead to considerable savings in the Health Service Executive's overtime bill.

The HSE would cut €40m from its overtime and allowances for around 4,500 junior doctors.

For the time being, non-consultant hospital doctors have disagreed with the HSE over the previous planned changes to rosters and working hours.

At present, the contract of the junior doctors stipulates a 39-hour week, consisting of 9pm to 5pm, Monday to Thursday and 9pm to 4pm on Friday. Anything outside these hours is classed as overtime.

According to the recommendations of the Labout Court, the doctors should work any five days out of seven. That means that they could be rostered to work at the weekends.

The Irish Medical Organisation will not comment the proposals until a meeting of its executive on Thursday.

If accepted, the recommendations would come into force from 1 July.
