Priest Steps Aside Following Abuse Allegations

A priest in the diocese of Kilmore has voluntarily stepped aside from his duties while allegations that he abused a child are investigated.

The details of the allegation made against the priest are not clear, but are thought to have taken place a considerable time ago.

In a statement via the diocesan website, Bishop Leo O'Reilly said the priest accused had taken voluntary administrative leave from his duties.

He added that the priest's decision was in accordance with diocesan child safeguarding procedures, but stressed that the accused cleric enjoys the right to the presumption of innocence while the complaint is being investigated.

He cautioned that such investigations can take a considerable time to complete and named an acting parish priest pending the outcome.

Under recently-adopted guidelines from the ministry, a spokesperson for the Catholic bishops said the church would not be commenting further on the identity of the priest.
