Clerys Damage Assessment Ongoing Following Flooding

Clerys department store in Dublin is expected to remain closed over the weekend after flooding caused when part of its roof collapsed.

The damage to the store is still being assessed, with black plastic remaining over the windows.

The heavy rainfall also caused damage to the roof of the Mater Hospital, with a number of patients needing to be moved to other departments.

Other damage caused includes the collapse of a section of Portland Lock along Royal Canal; flooding on in Oldcastle, Co Meath at Church St and St Bridget's Terrace; extensive damage to houses and shops on Main Street in Midleton; and the suspension of DART service Between Bray and Greystones due to power line damage.

Man Arrested After Car Crashes Through Trinity Gates
A 68-year-old man has been arrested after crashing through the gates of Trinity College Dublin. The car rammed the gates a number of times, which had already been closed by security staff, before breaking through and causing damage to the gates. The car continued to drive up Dawson Street and also caused damage to other cars.

Caution Urged On Roads As Weather Worsens
Heavy overnight rain has caused localised flooding on many roads across the country, with motorists being urged to drive with caution. Severe flooding in Blackpool village, Cork has been reported with 1.2m of water causing damage to shops and homes. Similar conditions have been reported in other parts of Co Cork.

35 Staff Left Unemployed After Fire Destroys Factory
35 people have been made redundant after a fire destroyed a pet food plant at Clonmellon on the Westmeath-Meath border. Staff at the Pet Treats plant have been temporarily laid off due to the extensive damage caused at the 18,000sq ft plant at the weekend.
