Nine Fine Gael Could Rebel Over Abortion Bill

Some nine members of Fine Gael are expected to vote against the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill when the first vote is held today.

According to the Irish Times, four TDs have confirmed that they will vote no, while a further five have "expressed reservation" about the bill.

The division in the party over the Bill is understood to be considered a test of Taoiseach Enda Kenny authority as party leader.

Mr Kenny has previously stated that he expects all party members to vote in favour of the Bill, with and TDs who do not losing the party whip.

Cowen 'Confident' On Leadership Vote
Brian Cowen has said he is confident he will remain leader of Fianna Fail after tonight's vote of confidence by his party. At present, just short of half of Fianna Fáil’s 71 TDs are expected to vote in favour of keeping Mr Cowen as Taoiseach ahead of vote, while 12 TDs have declared their intention to vote against the motion.

The statement reveals that members of the Parliamentary Labour Party agreed that the Party would not be involved in the formation of the next government, and that the Party would not be a member of the next government.
