Call for Labour Party To Vote Against Social Welfare Bill
Sinn Féin's leader in the Seanad, Senator David Cullinane has called on Labour Party Senators to have the courage of their convictions and vote against the Social Welfare Bill tomorrow.
Senator Cullinane said he believes the Social Welfare Bill can be defeated in the Seanad putting further pressure on the Dáil to vote it down.
He said: "I am sick and tired of listening to Labour Party politicians talking about how tough the budget process has been and then proceeding to vote in favour of it.
"The people who this budget has been hardest on are those who will be hit with cuts to carers’ allowance, parents of school going children, homeowners and all those who are already struggling to make ends meet.
"The Seanad now has an opportunity to defeat the Social Welfare Bill and send it back to the Dáil with added pressure on TDs to oppose the savage cuts it contains.
"This is the opportunity the Seanad has been waiting for. We can show today that the Seanad has a role to play in scrutinising legislation by sending a message that this bill is simply too reckless for us to pass."

Govt Win First Vote On Seanad Abolition
The government has won the first vote on the proposed Bill to abolish the Seanad. Independent Senator Feargal Quinn had forwarded a motion to extend the defeat, but it was defeated by 31 votes to 27. The Bill, the 32rd Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of Seanad Éireann, will now go to a full committee stage debate by the House.

Welfare Fraud Crackdown Continues
An Oireachtas committee will meet today to discuss current and future proposals to tackle social welfare fraud. The Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education will meet will discuss ways to stop people from fraudulently claiming benefits to which they are not entitled.
