Health Committee Hear Medical Council Amendment To Abortion Bill

An amendment to the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill 2013 has been proposed by the Medical Council.

According to RTÉ, the council have said that two psychiatrists would be sufficient to determine whether a woman is at risk of suicide that can only be averted by a termination.

Currently the legislation provides for two psychiatrists and an obstetrician.

Professor Kieran Murphy, Medical Council President, highlighted the proposed changes at the first of a three-day meeting by the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children.

The committee is meeting to review the draft abortion legislation ahead of presenting their report to the Dáil and the Seanad next month.
