Symphysiotomy Legislation To be Accepted By Govt

A private members' legislation lifting the Statute of Limitations for women affected by symphysiotomy has been accepted by the government, RTÉ News has reported.

It is understood that Sinn Féin's Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, who is the convenor of a cross-party group of TDs working on the issue, is to introduce the legislation in the Dáil on Tuesday night

The legislation will set aside the Statue of Limitations for one year, which will allow victims to seek redress through the courts.

Symphysiotomy was a procedure carried out on mothers before or after labour, in which they would undergo surgery to increase the size of the pelvic area to allow easier delivery of a baby.

However, as a result of the procedure, victims have suffered from incontinence, prolapsed organs, walking difficulties and chronic aches.

Around 200 women, who are now in their 70s and 80s, had the procedure.
