Child Porn Convicted Appeals Dismissal Decision

The Garda Commissioner’s decision to dismiss a Garda HQ employee after he admitted possession of child pornography has been reserved by the High Court.

In 2010 Anthony Purdy admitted before Dublin District Court to a single charge of possessing child pornography after video images were found on an external computer hard drive at his home on April 13th, 2009.

Following a payment of €2,500 made by Purdy to charity, the charge against him was struck out in 2011.

However last year Garda Commissioner, Martin Callinan, decided Mr Purdy’s position was “untenable” and that he should be dismissed.

In a non-binding recommendation the Civil Service Disciplinary Appeals Board, said dismissal was too severe. But when the matter was remitted to the Garda Commissioner he again decided to dismiss Purdy in October 2012.
