200 Jobs To Go At Medical Device Company

Some 200 staff are to let go by medical devices company Abbott, who have said “favourable” redundancy packages will be offered to the staff at their main Irish manufacturing plant.

Staff in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, were informed by management informed yesterday evening that they was seeking voluntary redundancies.

The redundancies were necessary "to meet the evolving needs of the business", the firm said in a statement.

"We regret the impact on our employees in Clonmel and the wider community, and our focus is on supporting our impacted employees," it added.

300 Staff Laid Off As HMV Stores Remain Closed
The receiver of HMV, Deloitte, has confirmed that 300 staff will be made redundant and 16 stores will remain closed. All of its stores were making a loss and a buyer was unable to be found. The staff had temporarily been laid off in January. The employees will receive statutory redundancy pay.

Childminding Ireland Staff Begin Indefinite Strike Action
Staff at Childminding Ireland have started indefinite strike action over a "bizarre and bogus" redundancy threat, the union Impact has said. The union said the strike would "continue until management withdraws compulsory redundancy notices served to five staff members, and enters meaningful talks over proposed restructuring plans.

HSE Meets Unions Over Retirement Scheme
Health Service Executive (HSE) management and unions were this week meeting at the LRC to discuss proposals to shed up to 5,000 staff by the end of the year. The €400m voluntary redundancy and early retirement scheme initially targets managerial and administrative staff, but may be extended to support staff.

Fintrax Urged To Clarify Workers Redundancy Payments
The management of Fintrax has been urged to inform workers from their Data Processing Centre in Connemara where they stand in relation to redundancy payments. News that 30 workers at the centre in An Tulach are to lose their jobs has been described by Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, as "regrettable".

FF Slams HMV For Leaving Workers Without Redundancy Pay
Fianna Fáil has slammed HMV for leaving workers without redundancy pay as the company enters liquidation. Four stores, three in Dublin and one in Limerick, were closed on Saturday, 10 September.
