Employment Tribunal Hears Appeal Over Fighting Sisters

An employee at the Mater Private Hospital restaurant has claimed she was unfairly dismissed following a fight with her sister, in which she is alleged to have drawn blood.

Following a three-week investigation the sisters, Deborah O'Keeffe-Byrne and Lisa, were both fired from the catering department at the Mater Private in Dublin.

There had been “bad blood” between the pair over a family matter and two minor altercations between them at work in the days leading up to the key incident on April 21, 2011, an Employment Appeals Tribunal heard.

It is claimed that during the incident, Debbie grabbed her sister by the upper arm drawing blood when her nails broke the skin.

It is then alleged that Lisa struck Deborah in the face. Both sister were later sent home.

While Ms O'Keeffe-Byrne accepts that the incident took place she claims that the sanction of being dismissed was too harsh.

The hearing will resume later this year.
