Shatter Defends Garda Station Closures

Garda stations do not act as a deterrent to burglaries. minister for Justice Alan Shatter has said.

He made the comment while defending the closure of garda stations, adding that the 100 stations that are due to close this year will be shut down.

With 95 stations closing today Mr Shatter Ireland does not require a garda station network devised in colonial times.

He reiterated that the objective in closing the stations was to maximise the operational time available to gardaí, increasing their mobility and visibility.

Garda Stations Face Closure
Ireland's Government is set to approve the closure of nearly one third of all garda stations it has been revealed. According to reports the Government is amid discussions which could see the closure of up to 200 rural garda stations. At present, there are 700 garda stations around the country, with 240 of these operated by just one garda.

Nine people have been arrested across Cavan and Monaghon in a garda drugs operation. They were all arrested in the early hours of this morning and are being held in garda stations around the country. A considerable amount of cash and controlled drugs were seized in the operation as well as ecstasy.

Announcing the biggest restructuring of An Garda Síochána in its 90-year history, Minister for Justice and Defence Alan Shatter has said 100 Garda stations across the State are to close. The closures represent just one part of a sweeping programme of change that has received heavy criticised.
