Number Of Lifeboat Rescues Up In 2012

1,041 people were rescued by the RNLI during 939 launches in 2012.

Launches had fallen slightly on comparison to 2011, but the number of rescues was up.

14% of lifeboat launches were to fishing boats and other commercial vessels, but over half of launches for the year were to power, sail and pleasure craft.

Lifeboats launched 73 times to stranded or grounded vessels and also dealt with 122 callouts to people who were ashore but needed help.

The Republics busiest lifeboat was Dún Laoghaire, which launched 46 times and rescued 71 people.

Crosshaven, Baltimore and Howth lifeboats all launched at least 40 times.
