€420m To Be Saved By The Health Service By 2016

A further €420m in health service savings are hoped to be made over the next three years.

The government announced the savings plan during the latest round of talks on an extension to the Croke Park agreement.

At the meeting trade unions heard that the savings for 2013 would be €150m.

The €420 million saving represent what is expected of the health service towards reducing the State’s pay and pensions bill by €1 billion by 2015.

Unions also heard that there would be a net reduction of 2,400 posts in the health service in 2013.

Further discussion will take place throughout Thursday between the government and trade unions hoping to reach an agreement on an extension of the Croke Park deal.
