Busy Urban Garda Station To Close 'Within Weeks'

As part of the governments ongoing review of services it has been revealed that one of busiest urban garda stations will close “in a matter of weeks”.

A desperate effort to stop the closure of Stepaside garda station has seen some 100 local residents and business owners gather at Lamb’s Cross Community Centre.

Justice Minister Alan Shatter attended the meeting in Stepaside and listened to several speakers say the decision would spell disaster for the area and lead to a surge in crime.

A particular cause of concern is that the Stepaside station covers such a wide area with a population catchment of up to 20,000.

It is understood however that a number of measures are to be put in place to cover the closer of the station.

Speaking at the meeting Chief Superintendent Diarmuid O'Sullivan said: "In the future, we will have a CAB system, which is a specialist dispatch system and is a different type of policing," the Irish Independent reported.

He added: "We won't have a building in Stepaside but we will have a computer system that will designate gardai to areas where crime will be considered hotpoints.”
