Woman On Trial For Stabbing Ex 17 Times

A Connemara woman charged with murdering her ex-boyfriend by allegedly stabbing him 17 times with a kitchen knife as she straddled his body has gone on trial.

At the Central Criminal Court sitting in Galway yesterday Maura Thornton (31), a native of Inverin, Connemara, Co Galway, was charged with the murder of Kevin Joyce (59) at Upper Salthill, Galway, on July 31 2011.

Ms Thornton broke down and cried as the charge was put to her in front of a packed courtroom yesterday.

It took her a few seconds to compose herself before she said “Guilty” and then “Not guilty” to the murder charge.

A jury of six men and six women will hear evidence in the trial, which is expected to last two weeks before Mr Justice Barry White.

Mother From Cork Charged With Murdering Son
A mother from charged with killing her eight-year-old son, Anthony, has been sent forward for trial. Diana Ward, 42, of Harrison Place, is accused of murdering Anthony at their family hone on 3rd September 2012. A post mortem confirmed Anthony died from asphyxiation.

On-Duty Firefighter Arrested On Suspicion Of Drink Driving
A fireman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving while on duty behind the wheel of a fire engine. The man was driving a fire truck on the Callan Road, Kilkenny over the weekend and approached a checkpoint. It is believed he was returning from an emergency incident and failed a breath test. He was issued a fixed charged penalty notice.

ESB Continuing To Work To Restore Power After Storm Lorenzo
ESB have restored power to some 12,000 homes, farms and businesses, affected by Storm Lorenzo, while work continues to restore power to 3,600 customers still without power. A clean-up operation is underway across the west and northwest following the storm on Thursday. According to reports, substantial flooding was experienced across Donegal.
