Teen Fined €400 For €5000 Crash

A 17-year-old boy has been ordered to pay €400 in compensation after causing more than €5,000 worth of damage when he crashed his mother’s partners car.

The teenager, who is already on probation for other offences, pleaded guilty at the Dublin Children's Court yesterday to motor theft, criminal damage and driving without a licence or insurance.

Judge Aingeal Ni Chonduin heard that the boy took his mother's partner's car out for a drive and on the way back he ploughed into a wall.

The court heard that the car's owner needed it for work but it was taken off the road as a result of the crash, in north Dublin, last April.

Defence solicitor Gareth Noble said the drive had cost the teen's family heavily but he asked the court to note that the boy had been co-operative with gardai.

He said the boy was aged 16 at the time and was "an inexperienced driver" and is also under the supervision of the Probation Service.

The teenager, who does casual work, was ordered to appear again next June when a pre-sentence probation report is to be furnished to the court.

Judge Ni Chonduin also told the boy, who was accompanied to his hearing by his mother, that he will have to bring €400 to court.
