Shatter Defends Gardaí Not To Intervene At Ryan Funeral

A decision by the gardaí to not intervene after a volley of shots was fired at the funeral of dissident republican Alan Ryan has been defended by minister for justice Alan Shatter.

Mr Shatter said that those on duty had to make "proper and mature" judgements, adding that there were people at the funeral who would have been happy to bring about "a major confrontation".

The minister repeated his description of some of the events at the funeral in Dublin at the weekend as "scandalous" and "unacceptable".

A Garda investigation is now under way after shots were fired into the air as the 32-year-old's coffin was being removed from his home at Grange Abbey Drive in Donaghmede.

Masked men and women in black berets and military clothes escorted the paramilitary-style funeral, which took place on Saturday afternoon.
