Balbriggan Beach Closed Following Sewage Leak
A warning has been issued after raw sewage was discharged into the Irish sea for up to 26 hours after a malfunction at a treatment plant went unnoticed.
A member of the public on Balbriggan Beach in north Dublin raised the alarm yesterday when the waste water was washed back in with the tide.
Fingal County Council has closed the beach to bathers and is awaiting results of water quality samples.
Aecom, the contractor who operates and maintains Barnageeragh Wastewater Treatment Plant and associated pumping stations on behalf of the Council, is currently working with us to rectify the problems.

The government has been accused of putting lives at risk with its "failure" to put in place a 21st century water treatment system. Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh made the comment following the publication of the Environmental Protection Agency's Urban Waste Water Report for 2014.
