New Standards Published For Safety Of Window Blinds

New guidance and safety standards have been published to deal with concerns about the safety of window blinds.

The move follows the deaths of several toddlers who got caught in the loop cords and chains of blinds.

The two new standards give guidance to customers, manufacturers and suppliers about how to make blinds safe.

They include cutting the loop in cords where possible, raising them so they cannot be reached by children, and devices that can be used to make cords safe.

The National Standards Authority of Ireland said it is currently taking a number of proactive steps to ensure Irish manufacturers and suppliers of window blinds are made aware of the revised standards.

However, these standards are voluntary and their implementation is not policed.

Windowblindsafety.ie founder and campaigner Aaron O'Connell said he feels some companies will only comply with the rules if they are forced to do so.
