Financial Worries Lead To Spike In Calls To Older People's Helpline

A helpline for older people has seen a spike in the number of people using its services.

The Senior Helpline reported a 50% rise in calls in the first month of this year compared to the same period last year.

Given the economic crisis it may be no surprise that many callers were concerned about savings and investments as well as the financial futures of their adult children.

A number of callers said they have to spend scarce funds on fuel during this damp, cold summer.

The confidential service said another big increase was in calls from people reporting break-ins, in both urban and rural areas.

The charity that runs the helpline, Third Age, said it repeatedly hears from lonely and isolated older people.

The Senior Helpline, on LoCall 1850-440444, is provided by more than 350 trained older volunteers.

Third Age's website states: "Senior Helpline's vision and mission is that every older person in Ireland would know the LoCall number, call if they need us and receive an empathetic response."
