Highest Number Of Births Recorded In 2009

There were 75,554 children born in Ireland during 2009, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

This was the highest number of births recorded since 1891 when there were 76,877 children born in the 26 counties. The number of births in 2009 marked the fourth consecutive year of annual increases.

The number of births in 2009 was up by 381 births or 0.5% from 2008 and up 21,630 or 40.1% since 1999. The birth rate in 2009 was 16.9 per 1,000 of the population compared with 17.0 in 2008 and 14.4 in 1999.

Just over 23% of births in 2009 were to mothers of non-Irish nationality.

The number of births outside marriage that occurred in 2009 was 25,252 or 33.4% of all births.

Ireland Tops European Birth Rate
Ireland had the highest birth rate in Europe in 2008 according to new figures from the ESRI. The Economic and Social Research Institute said there was a 5% increase in the number of births between 2007 and 2008. There were 75,587 births in Ireland in 2008, according to the ESRI's Perinatal Statistics Report.
