Soldier Targeted In Car Bomb

In the North a soldier is said to be very lucky to be alive after a bomb was left in the car he had been driving in North Belfast.

The device was found under the driver’s seat of the vehicle, which was parked off the Ligoniel Road, at Blackdam Court.

It is understood if the bomb had gone off, the soldier and others in the vicinity, could have been killed.

Dissident republicans are being blamed.

SDLP North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness said: "This is a very sinister and disturbing incident which could have killed or seriously injured innocent people in our community.

"While this has undoubtedly been very traumatic for the man who discovered the bomb, it has also been very distressing for residents who had to evacuate their homes.

"People here want to live in peace and violence in any form is totally unjustifiable and is rejected by the overwhelming majority of people in North Belfast."

The security alert caused a lot of disruption to the area, around 60 residents had to be evacuated from their homes, they have since returned.
