Fifth Of Irish 'Never Used Internet'

A report released on Wednesday has revealed that over 20% of Irish people have never used the internet.

European statistics agency Eurostat found that around 78% of the country now had internet access, but still over a fifth had never been online.

Of the 27 EU members, the Netherlands was the most plugged in with 94% of households surfing the net, with 83% of those operating broadband systems.

The most unconnected country was Bulgaria, with only 45% of the country having access to the world-wide web.

In the EU27, almost three quarters of households had access to the internet in the first quarter of 2011, compared with almost half in the first quarter of 2006. The share of households with broadband internet connections more than doubled between 2006 and 2011, to reach 68% compared with 30% in 2006.

During the same period, the share of individuals aged 16-74 in the EU27 who had never used the internet decreased from 42% to 24%.
