Former Anglo Director Arrested

The former finance director of Anglo Irish Bank, William McAteer, has been arrested for a second time.

According to reports this morning, Mr McAteer was arrested at 8am at his home in Rathgar in Dublin by detectives from the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation.

He is being detained at Irishtown Garda Station and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

The investigation into irregularities at the bank have been ongoing since in emerged that directors had been issued with loans and had swapped monies with competitor banks to hide deficits.

It is believed there was a €7.2 billion transfer of loans between Anglo Irish and Irish Life and Permanent in 2008 to cover-up shortfalls.

Meanwhile, in 2009, Mr McAteer received a loan of €8 million owing to Anglo. The loan was secured on Anglo shares, which are effectively worthless following the bank’s nationalisation.

It is the second time Mr McAteer has been arrested in connection with the ongoing investigations at the bank. He had originally been held in March.

A number of files have already been sent to the DPP in connection with the overall investigation, according to Garda.
