Westlife Split - But Not Before One Last Tour

After 14 years Irish boy band Westlife will call it quits - but not before performing a farewell tour in summer 2012.

The band announced their decision last night but said that it was "completely amicable" and that being in the band had been "a dream come true".

Originally a five piece, they formed in 1998 with Brian McFadden later leaving to embark on his solo career.

The remaining four members of the Dublin-Sligo band will now follow in McFadden's footsteps, each with hopes of launching solo endeavours, after the band separates in 2012.

Shane Filan hopes to embark on a solo career, Mark Feehily would like to concentrate on songwriting, Nicky Byrne has hopes to become a radio DJ and Kian Egan is planning to work in television.

Westlife’s first seven singles peaked at number one and the group went on to sell over 44 million records worldwide which includes studio albums, singles, video release, and compilation albums.

Despite the group's success, they only have one hit single in the United States, Swear It Again, which peaked in 2000 on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 20.

The band were originally signed by Simon Cowell and are managed by Louis Walsh.

Before the four will go their separate ways they have planned a farewell tour for summer 2012, as well as a Greatest Hits album coming next month.
