Minister Condemns Farmer's Protest

The Minister for Agriculture has condemned what he has called the aggressive nature of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) protest when his Department offices in Johnstown Castle were occupied.

Two department of agriculture staff and one protestor were injured during the protest over delayed payments to farmers.

Around 30 farmers forced their way into the Department and it is understood that the altercation took place as the farmers tried to enter the door.

While acknowledging the right to protest the Minister said that the actions "went beyond the bounds of acceptable behaviour".

He pointed out once again that the delivery of direct payments of €1.5 billion will be paid again this year even quicker than last year, and that substantial payments under AEOS and REPS will be made by the end of the year.

He regretted that the IFA action led to the injury of a member of his Departments staff and conveyed his good wishes for his recovery.

Meanwhile the IFA have said they will meet with trade union IMPACT to discuss the sit-in.

IMPACT has called on the IFA to instruct any of its members involved in scuffles during the protest to contact the gardaí.
