Irish Women Urged 'Examine Breasts'

Young women are being urged to check their breasts after new research has revealed a third of women between the ages 18 and 24 have never performed a breast check.

The research found that even though the majority of women believe they should check their breasts for changes at least once a month - only one in two actually do so.

Aviva Health Insurance together with Breast Cancer Ireland are launching their “Be Breast Aware – Have a Feel Day" Campaign aimed at raising awareness amongst young women in Ireland.

To encourage 'feels' on the day, Aviva's free health and fitness app, Health Mate, will go pink and offer a handy but discreet monthly breast check reminder on their phone, so that women are encouraged to check themselves long after Breast Cancer Awareness Month is over.

The campaign will dedicate one day, Thursday, October 20, to remind young women to conduct a breast self-exam.

"Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women and this campaign aims to give young women the confidence to check their breasts," said Dr. Naoimh Kenny, GP on Aviva's Medical Council.
