Search For 'Golden Eagle' Continues

The search for a missing yacht, believed to be lost on route to Cork, will continue today.

Due to arrive in Crookhaven, Co Cork, last week the vessel has still not arrived and the Coast Guard service says there has been no sighting of, or radio contact with, the two man crew as of yet.

Efforts got underway yesterday to try and locate the missing the 32-foot yacht named Golden Eagle.

It is understood that the yacht’s route started from Bermuda and was due to finish in West Cork on Thursday last.

A crew of two men are on board - a 69-year-old Norwegian and a 60-year-old New Zealander.

The yacht left Bermuda in the middle of last month there has been no radio contact, and concern is growing for the safety of the two man crew.

Coastgaurd Services believe the yacht may have gotten into difficulties.

An initial search off the Cork coast was carried out by the Shannon based coastguard helicopter. Now an Air Corps Casa reconnaissance aircraft and five naval vessels will resume a sweep of an area over 300km off the southwest Cork coast.

A spokesman for the coastguard service in Bermuda said the yacht would have been sailing through an area of the Atlantic where the tail end of Hurricane Katia was still active.

Coast guards in Norway, Bermuda and Ireland are now involved in coordinating the search operation.
