Past Northern Murders In Focus

A new report has said that a young man shot dead by the British Army at the height of The Troubles in August 1971 was innocent.

The PSNI's Historic Enquiries Team (HET) has said that the victim, Billy McKavanagh, 21, was shot in the back as he ran away when confronted by soldiers in the nationalist Markets area near Belfast city centre.

However, despite the conclusions, the soldier responsible maintains that the person he shot was armed.

Another killing, this time a more recent one blamed on loyalist paramilitaries has also been in the news.

A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Bobby Moffett on the loyalist Shankill in May 2010.

The 26-year-old was detained in the Antrim area on Wednesday morning as the PSNI probe into the violent death of the former loyalist prisoner - who was shot in broad daylight - continued.

Last Saturday, another man was freed after being questioned in connection with the bloody murder.
