New Household Charge Approved

It has been reported that the Cabinet has passed a new household charge.

Details of the €100 service charge, to be payable from next year, will be announced this afternoon.

The charge combines water and property tax until schemes for charging for water and property tax are introduced.

It is anticipated that low-income households will be omitted from the charge.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Environment Minister Phil Hogan are expected to release details before the summer recess.

Beginning next year, the EU/IMF bailout dictates that an interim charge must be put in place for water.
