Water Charges 'Fair For Families' - Minister Howlin

Water charges will be "fair for families", Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin has said, adding that there would be no standing charge along with a "decent" allowance for households.

Mr Howlin made his comments as he attended a Cabinet meeting at Government Buildings.

The minister said that in the Programme for Government it had been promised that every household, particularly those with children, would be given a generous allowance of free water, adding that they had been working to achieve that goal.

Minister Howlin added that paying for utilities such as water was one of a number of difficult steps on the road to recovery.
