Dublin Shortlisted For World Design Capital 2014

The Taoiseach has welcomed the shortlisting of Dublin for World Design Capital 2014 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID).

Responding to the announcement the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, said: "I'm delighted that Dublin is one of the three cities shortlisted for this designation. Dublin is a distinctive and historic city renowned for its heritage and architecture as well as unique examples of modern and innovative design. Dublin is also known for an unusual warmth and friendliness not often observed in a capital city. For these reasons, it would be an ideal candidate to host the World Design Capital in 2014".

The other cities shortlisted for the prestigious title are Bilbao and Cape Town. The winning city will be announced in the autumn.

The World Design Capital initiative seeks to promote and encourage the use of design to further the social, economic and cultural development of the world's cities. The designation is awarded every two years. Helsinki has been appointed World Capital for 2012.

Successful World Design Capital designation for Dublin would bring economic and reputational benefits and provide a legacy of significant jobs opportunities for the city and for Ireland.
