Taoiseach Travels To New York
The Taoiseach will travel to the United States later today for a series of engagements in New York.
Marking the very close ties between Ireland and the US, Enda Kenny TD will meet with business leaders, opinion formers, the media and representatives of the Irish American community.
The visit will inform the US that Ireland has a new government with a strong majority to tackle the country's problems and will give a clear message that Ireland is open for business.
The Taoiseach’s programme includes meetings with key business leaders on Wall Street, engagements with Irish companies who are doing business in the US and a public roundtable at the Council on Foreign Relations.
Tonight, he will meet members of the Irish community in New York and leaders of a number of Irish-American social, cultural and sporting organisations.
Tomorrow, his programme closes with a keynote address at the American Ireland 36th New York Dinner Gala at the Lincoln Center.
The Taoiseach's visit was planned before the recent killing of Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan. Commenting before his departure, the Taoiseach said: “While I intend to bring a positive message about Ireland to New York, I am also very mindful that this is a very poignant moment to visit and a very emotional time for her citizens as the terrible memories of September 11th 2001 are re-awakened. During my visit I will be reflecting on those terrible losses on 9/11, including those Irish people and members of the Irish American community who were lost on that day.”

Irish Writer Wins Top US Book Award
Irish writer Colum McCann’s latest book, Let the Great World Spin, has won the top fiction prize at the US National Book Awards. The Dubliner’s latest novel is a story about life in New York City in the 1970s and earned the writer a prize of $10,000, beating off competition from four other scribes.

200 New Jobs Announced In DPD Ireland Expansion
Two hundred new jobs are to be created as part of a €13 million expansion announced by DPD Ireland. DPD has announced that it is to double the size of its Athlone headquarters, creating a total of 200 new jobs over the next five years, with 70 of those jobs expected to be filled by Christmas.

Irish Teenager Killed In New York
An Irish teenager has been killed in New York after being knocked down by a car, RTÉ has reported. It is understood Kalie Gill, 15, and her family moved to New York from Fenagh, Co Leitrim, earlier this year.
