Charges Follow Mother's Day Stab Death

Police in the North investigating the murder of 53-year-old Lynn Coburn in the Co Antrim area on Mothering Sunday have charged a man with murder and attempted murder.

The move comes soon after the PSNI said they were questioning a 33-year-old man - believed to be the victim's son - over the death and the attempted murder of another son.

The woman died and her other son, aged 31, was injured when they were stabbed in Connor, near Kells.

Police were called to the house at about 12.30pm on Sunday to find the premises awash with blood after the victim's wounded son raised the alarm.

A man - who is thought to have been suffering from mental health problems - was arrested at gunpoint by shocked police officers who were left severly shaken by the scene of carnage.

Commenting, the SDLP representative Declan O'Loan said: "This is a shocking family tragedy ending in the death of the mother.

"I want to extend my sympathy to the whole family involved."

Democratic Unionist representative Mervyn Storey said: "It is a terrible tragedy for any person to be murdered. But for a mother to be murdered on Mother's Day is truly awful.

Police said he would appear before Belfast Magistrates' Court.
