Garda Ceremony Honours First UN Contingent

As part of a special ceremony at Garda Headquarters, the Garda Commissioner welcomed honoured guests to "commemorate a very historic time in the history of An Garda Síochána" when the first ever contingent of members on a United Nations Mission were deployed.

At Friday's ceremony, speaking to those "who served on the mission with such distinction", the Commissioner extended his thanks and appreciation for the difficult and challenging roles they faced, and the professional way duties were carried out.

He paid tribute to Garda Des Connelly and Garda Joe O'Keeffe who were on the mission "but unfortunately are no longer with us".

He also acknowledged the presence of former Deputy Commissioner Peter Fitzgerald "who has played such an important role in UN operations over the years and in projecting a positive image of An Garda Síochána".

Also in attendance was the Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter.
