Lowry Dismisses Moriarty Report Claims
Tipperary North TD Michael Lowry has dismissed recent claims made in the Moriarty Report.
He described the claim that he sped up or shortened the licence process during the awarding of a licence to Esat Digifone as “absolute and total nonsense.”
On Tipp FM, he said the report was blatantly and disgracefully wrong in its opinions.
The Moriarty Tribunal published its second and final report into the acquisition of the second mobile phone licence to Esat Digifone in 1996.
Established in 1997, the inquiry looked into the financial affairs of former Taoiseach Charles Haughey and former Fine Gael communications Minister Michael Lowry.
This final report investigated the links between businessman Denis O'Brien and Michael Lowry.
In 1995, while Mr Lowry was Communications Minister, Denis O'Brien's Digifone was awarded Ireland's second mobile phone licence.
The report indicates 'beyond doubt' that Michael Lowry shared information with Denis O'Brien 'of significant value and assistance to him in securing the licence'.
Responding to the findings of the Moriarty Report, Michael Lowry said the tribunal had a “slash and burn approach”, and that he had no intention of considering his position as a TD.

Journalist Wins Defamation Case
A journalist and broadcaster has been awarded tens of thousands of euros in legal costs after successfully defending a defamation claim. Journalist Sam Smyth was accused of defaming County Tipperray TD, Michael Lowry during TV3's Tonight with Vincent Browne programme and in an Irish Independent article.

Taoiseach To Answer Questions On Report
The Taoiseach is expected to respond to questions in the debate on the Moriarty Tribunal report tomorrow. The Government speaking list has not yet been finalised, however Mr Kenny will answer on the report and issues relating to Fine Gael fundraising.

The Taoiseach is due to respond to questions in the debate on the Moriarty Tribunal report today. TD Michael Lowry has dismissed the tribunal findings and said Judge Michael Moriarty and his team had been involved in a witch-hunt not based on evidence.
