Missing Marie Greene 'Thought Dead'

A missing Co Westmeath woman, Marie Greene, is suspected to be dead, according to Gardaí on Tuesday morning.

Investigating Officers have been engaged in an extensive search since the 37-year-old's disappearance last Sunday. There have been no sightings of Ms Greene in over a week. Gardaí also confirmed there has been no activity on her mobile phone or bankcard.

A Gardaí spokesman said their inquiries so far indicate there is a “strong possibility” she may be dead.

Superintendent Aidan Glacken said their investigations have led to a section of bog on the Mullingar road, outside Athlone.

On Monday, a man in his 60s was arrested in connection with the disappearance, on suspicion of murder. The arrest follows a surveillance operation.

He is being detained in Athlone Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act.

Meanwhile, Gardaí have sealed off a house in the Monksland area of Athlone as part of their ongoing inquiries. A forensic assessment of the dwelling is believed to be taking place.

Marie Greene from Co Westmeath has not been seen since 9pm last Sunday after she left her home at St Mel's terrace in the town.

Her mother, Winnie Greene, said last week that it was out of character for Marie not to keep in touch with her family.

Ms Greene is 5ft 5in and of slim build with fair hair. She was wearing jeans, white trainers and a blue fleece when she disappeared. Gardaí said she has medium length brown hair, which is normally tied in a ponytail.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Athlone Gardai on 090 6492600.
