Elderly Woman Injured In Arson Attack

An 87-year-old woman has been rescued from her burning home after an arson attack in County Cork.

A Garda and a member of the Garda Reserve are also being treated in hospital in Cork after the woman's house was set on fire early this morning.

According to reports this morning, the alarm was raised at around 5am when smoke started billowing from the woman's home at Murrough lane, off Blarney Street in the city.

Gardaí at Gurranabraher were forced to break down the front door of the woman's house before rescuing the woman from her upstairs bedroom and all three were taken to the Mercy Hospital in the city where they are being treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.

The woman's house was substantially damaged by smoke.

Gardaí believe she was targeted in a case of mistaken identity.

Gardaí are appealing for people who were in the Blarney Street/Murrough Lane area between 4.30am and 5.15am to contact them at Gurranabraher Garda station.
