US Energy Secretary Greeted By Taoiseach

The Irish Premier, Brian Cowen has this week met with the United States Energy Secretary Stephen Chu.

The Taoiseach held the meeting in Government Buildings and warmly greeted Mr Chu, who won a share in the Nobel Prize in Physics for work related to 'cooling and trapping atoms with laser light' before being appointed to his current position by President Barrack Obama.

Mr Cowen and Mr Chu met for about 30 minutes during which they discussed a range of issues related to energy and climate change.

Among the issues raised were renewable energy, energy security, US policy on energy, climate change and the technological challenges posed by the search for sustainable use or energy technology such as electric cars.

Mr Chu then held a special meeting in Government Buildings attended by many key representatives from the energy sector in Ireland.

The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan hosted the meeting on 'Clean Energy; the Next Industrial Revolution'.

Irish Carbon Emissions Almost 60% Above EU Average - Report
A new report has revealed that carbon emissions in Ireland are among the highest in Europe, with Ireland beating the European average by 58%. According to the report, published by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the increase is due to the greater use of high-carbon fuels including oil, coal and peat.
