Rasharkin Return Rerouted

NI's Parades Commission has down a swift 'about-turn' and accepted a revised application from a loyalist band for its parade through the Co Antrim village of Rasharkin on Friday evening.

The virtual U-Turn means that while Ballymaconnelly Sons of Conquerors Flute Band will still only parade through the village once, it is now permitted to make a return by another route. A Commission statement said there was now less potential for significant stoppages and "no restrictions are necessary".

Yesterday, DUP MP Jeffrey Donaldson said he was "deeply disappointed" that the Commission had originally prevented the 40 loyalist bands from taking their usual return route back to their vehicles on Friday.

Commenting, Mr Donaldson said the earlier decision "to corral hundreds of bandsmen and their supporters" into the heart of the village - close to protestors - was "madness".

Now, the bands will march back again - but via a new route down Main Street in the village before returning by Moneyleck Road, Bann Road and Glebe Road to its originally assembly point.

The latest decision has been welcomed by the DUP but rejected by Sinn Fein.
