West Belfast Alert Ends

A suspicious object which led to an overnight security alert has been declared a hoax device after Army bomb disposal officers were called to examine it on the Donegall Road close to the Park Centre in west Belfast.

The area near the off-slip to the M1 motorway was closed to traffic at about 2am on Wednesday. It has since been re-opened.

Meanwhile, an elderly man has been stabbed during an attempted car theft in the Malone area of south Belfast.

It happened shortly before 11.50pm on Monday at Bladon Drive, off the Malone Road but news only emerged last night of how the victim - who is in his 70s - was stepping into his car in his own driveway when he was approached by two men.

One of the men tried to take the car keys from the pensioner and during a struggle, he sustained a stab wound to the side.
