News Of BT Young Scientist Winner Due

Students across the country are awaiting the results of the 2010 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, which will be announced today.

Last year, farmer sons John D O'Callaghan and Liam McCarthy, took the winner's trophy and went on to win first prize at the EU Young Scientist Contest in Paris, France.

The project, entitled 'The Development of a Convenient Test Method for Somatic Cell Count and its Importance in Milk Production' was given high praise when it won in January, most notably for its simplicity and commercial viability.

The 2010 winner will be announced shortly after 7pm this evening.

Yesterday, Minister for Defence Willie O’Dea visited over 30 of the Limerick students taking part in the event at the RDS in Dublin.

The Minister said: "It was an honour to have met the students from Limerick schools taking part in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition today and to see their outstanding projects. There are 22 projects in total from Limerick covering a wide range of areas and issues. They have done themselves, their schools, their parents and Limerick proud and I personally congratulated each student and their teachers on their great work and I wished them well in this competition. I have no doubt Limerick will come out on top in many categories as it has done in previous years.

"The city and county has an excellent track record in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition and I am confident after getting a sneak preview of the diverse and unique projects entered by our students that Limerick will once again triumph. I was extremely impressed with each project and the passion shown by the students.

"These students are the future of our country and based on what I saw and those I met today this country's future will be very bright indeed."
