Top Gang Leaders Jailed

Two major players in the country's most powerful criminal gangs have been sentenced to 12 and 14 years in prison over a €2 million drug haul.

William Hynes and John Mangan are both senior members in an organised crime group run by Martin 'Marlo' Hyland, who was shot dead in Finglas.

Marlo's gang was so large that an entire special operations unit was dedicated to investigating it after Operation Anvil, which was originally established in 2005 to tackle Dublin's gun crime, uncovered its true scale.

Mangan was on bail when arrested and now faces a 14 year sentence consecutive to another 14 years he was originally given last year for drug trafficking.

Hynes also has a previous conviction for drug trafficking and was only out of jail one year when he was caught for this offence.

The two are among 28 people targeted by the garda operation 'Oak' who have been brought before the courts.

Judge Pat McCartan congratulated the Gardaí on the success of what he called "a very carefully orchestrated undercover operation".
