Abducted Man Shot In Ardoyne

There has been a so-called punishment shooting in the North.

A 23-year-old man was shot last night after being abducted on Ardoyne Avenue, in north Belfast.

Police said he was bundled into a small red van by two men wearing balaclavas.

He was then driven to an entry off Highbury Gardens, where he was shot once in his right leg.

His attackers then made off along Berwick Road.

The victim was later taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg.

SDLP North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness, the party's spokesperson on justice, condemned the shooting.

He said: "This is a retrospect step back to a time we want to leave behind. Nobody has the right to inflict any kind of physical harm on another individual.

"I hope those responsible are quickly brought to justice and a message is sent out to other still stuck in the past that they will go to jail for their actions," he stated.

The incident was reported shortly after 7.30pm.

Police have appealed to anyone with information about the case to contact them on 0845 600 8000.
